Washington State Judge Orders Kalshi to Halt Most Betting Operations

WASHINGTON: A state court in Washington has ordered Kalshi, a prediction market platform, to cease offering sports gambling and other types of wagers. The decision was made by King County Superior Court Judge John McHale following a lawsuit filed by the state. This injunction requires Kalshi to halt its betting operations to comply with state laws and protect consumers from potentially misleading advertising. Kalshi, which is not licensed by the state's Gambling Commission, has been operating without registration in Washington.

Judge McHale found that Kalshi's advertisements suggesting legal betting in the state could mislead consumers, as such activities are not legal under Washington law. "Kalshi must implement an IP address and residency-based geofence by August 19 and a multi-source geofencing solution by September 2. This does not include all the wagers offered on Kalshi, but it includes a substantial part of their business, which in recent years has been increasingly driven by sports wagers," Nick Brown said. The broader implication of this ruling could affect online betting operations across the country as other states might follow suit in enforcing stricter regulations. Kalshi has been ordered to comply with these geofencing requirements, which could significantly impact its business model in Washington and possibly beyond.
