NASA Scientists Pursue Fire Clouds in Utah

VIENNA: NASA scientists are tracking pyrocumulonimbus clouds, known as pyroCbs, over Utah to better understand these towering, smoke-filled structures. The research is part of the INSPYRE mission, which involves using NASA's ER-2 aircraft and other tools to study how these clouds impact the upper atmosphere and potentially the ozone layer. PyroCbs are increasingly recognized as powerful weather phenomena that can inject particles and gases into the stratosphere, influencing global weather patterns. On August 3, 2026, the research team conducted a significant sampling run, capturing data from the Widemouth 2 fire in Utah, which had produced notable pyroCb activity. "Reveal two discrete pulses of pyroCb action," Michael Fromm said, highlighting the observations made by NASA's Aqua satellite.

These pulses were significant enough to be identified by their cloud-top brightness temperatures, indicating their potential to reach the stratosphere. The findings from this mission could have broad implications for understanding climate dynamics and atmospheric processes. The data collected will help scientists assess the long-term effects of wildfires on the stratosphere and global climate, providing valuable insights for future research and policy development.
