ROME: NASA astronaut Mike Fincke is retiring after an illustrious 30-year career. Fincke, who has flown on four space missions, spent 549 days in space, and completed nine spacewalks, leaves behind a legacy of significant contributions to NASA, particularly involving the International Space Station. His departure marks the end of an era in which he played pivotal roles in various space exploration projects. Fincke's career began when he joined NASA's 16th astronaut class in 1996.
His first spaceflight was in 2004 aboard the Soyuz TMA‑4, during which he served as a science officer and flight engineer for the International Space Station's Expedition 9. Over the years, he took part in several critical missions, including commanding Expedition 18 and participating in the final flight of the space shuttle Endeavour. Most recently, Fincke piloted the SpaceX Crew‑11 mission, highlighting his involvement in the evolution of space technology and human spaceflight. "Over a remarkable career, Mike served our nation as a pilot, engineer, astronaut, and mentor. From long-duration missions aboard the International Space Station to helping prepare the Artemis generation, his contributions have helped position NASA for what comes next.
The success we're building on today is possible because of people like Mike, who dedicated their careers to moving our space program forward and preparing the next generation to carry the mission even further. I'd like to congratulate Mike on an incredible career and thank him for his decades of service to NASA, our nation, and the countless people who had the opportunity to learn from and fly alongside him," Vanessa Wyche said. Fincke's departure, as they continue to build on the foundations laid by his work. His influence on the development of the Commercial Crew Program and commitment to mentoring future astronauts will continue to inspire and shape the next generation of space explorers.
NASA will now look to fill the gap left by such a dedicated and experienced astronaut as they push forward with their ambitious plans for the future.
